Switching on the surround system for the first time brings up a step-by-step setup menu on the TV screen. One of the steps includes an auto-setup option which makes use of a calibration microphone that comes with the surround system. The calibration unit has two mics representing your ears mounted on a plastic bar that is attached to a 4m lead that you plug into the rear of the main unit. You place the calibration mic in your listening position and the setup programme then adjusts the volume of each speaker in turn for optimum surround effect for where you sit.

Before I bought the system, I was concerned that this auto calibration might not work to my satisfaction and I would have no means of adjusting speaker volumes individually.

Again, concerns were unwarranted. Nevertheless, the quality of the sound produced is remarkably good. By the standards of my Quad electrostic speaker hi-fi system, this Sony surround system is impressive, particularly for the price.

In addition, the surround system provides features on your TV that you only find on modern smart TVs; i. My MP3 audio files sound great on this system. I hear musical instruments that aren't audible when listening with earphones plugged into the PC, despite the latter having a good quality audio card. There is also an on-screen web-browser, but inputting URLs using the remote control is a pain.

This system is no substitute for a PC if you want to browse the web. To sum up, this has been a very successful purchase, at least as far as the equipment is concerned. Unfortunately, the experience was let-down by Amazon's delivery service. The courier failed to deliver the first order, and the re-ordered system didn't exactly arrive promptly either.

I normally buy from Amazon, even though their price may not be the lowest on their website, because of their excellent no quibbles returns policy and collection service. However, I'm finding that their delivery service is getting so unreliable that I'm having to take that into consideration when deciding who to buy from.

Rant over. One last point; I normally keep the packaging for some months in case it all has to be returned.

If you intend to do that, make a note as you unpack the box of how the components fit into the box. After I unpacked, I wasn't able to get the polystyrene separators, alone, back in the box and close the lid, so how I would get the components in as well, I don't know. As the product was launched in early it has all the gizmo and have yet to check them out.

The sound quality was set up automatically and cannot fault it. The 3D setting sound is the one to go for. So far only had it for a day and so far up to its job. The only downside is the set up menu that was not given much details instructions. Even though with common sense it was easy enough to do. To get the best sound and picture quality it always best to get good quality products. Nothing worse paying big money and getting standard results.

Shame on Sony for shipping products without any quality control checks. No return for refund, only exchange for same product. Never again. I did not do any further inspection on the rest of the system since it was going back anyway. Cons: This is the second unit I have received and this time the dvd player wont read dvds or blu rays. Anything input over HDMI to this creates a purple line across the screen, where somehow the bottom is cut off and placed on top! I can see my start menu mid screen. Going over the return, as this item apparently is a return for exchange only, so if you don't like it you are stuck with it. Horrible warranty period, only 30 days!

Overall Review: After about 6 months, the unit powered on, but touch panel failed to respond, and the unit never fully came online again. I have tried to contact Sony for assistance with repairing the unit.

Sony's phone support said they couldn't help me find a service shop, and the online support form has never yielded a response.

I would shop at newegg again, I would not buy any Sony product anywhere again. Pros: Easy to setup especially once you have the speakers placed where you want the auto calibration mic helps to adjust the system to provide the best decibel level from each speaker to provide an even sound around the room. If you've used or own a PS3 then the menu interface will be very familiar and easy to navigate since they're practically the exact same.

If you use the default video cable it will generate some strange gray scrolling bars on screen that are quite annoying.
