Protect your Reader Pocket Edition With a durable nylon outer shell and soft inner lining, the Sony Pocket Edition Reader Zippered Case protects your Reader pocket edition from dust, debris, scratches and dings. A durable nylon outer shell and soft inner lining protects your Reader Pocket Edition from the everyday wear and tear of travel. Compatible with the Reader Pocket Edition. And even the Kindle 2 is a very thin and portable reader. Astak's 6" EZ Reader likewise is no bigger than a trade paperback. But they did require at least a medium purse or a very large coat pocket, and some thoughtful arrangement to keep the screen safe. We showed it around to a few folks and each and every one exclaimed "wow, I could put that in my pocket!
Looks like Sony got both the name and size just right for folks who prefer portability over fewer page turns. At x resolution, the PRS can display just as much text per screen as the 6" Sony Readers which share the 's resolution. But that text is obviously smaller on the 5" screen, and most of us will opt for the medium rather than default small size font on the PRS, so you'll have to turn the page more frequently there are fewer words per page when the font size is increased.
The display is the same stunning Vizplex eInk technology found on the PRS and many other ebook readers. It's every bit as good as the PRS's in terms of contrast and sharpness and is one of the best looking on the market. It's capable of displaying 8 shades of gray and this is useful when displaying book covers and graphics rather than text.
Since this is eInk, the page refreshes each time you turn it turns black for less than a second and it only uses power when you turn the page. That means 2 weeks of battery life assuming your read each day longer if you don't and the machine won't use any power when displaying a page.
The Pocket Edition is available in three colors: rose, silver and navy blue though the box labels say red and black when they should say rose and navy blue. Build quality and style are very similar to Sony's earlier readers, but the side and end caps are plastic while the earlier models were all metal. The front and back faces are metal and the reader looks attractive and what can only be called "cute" thanks to its small size.
There's a large, easy to operate d-pad for navigation and page turns, but no dedicated page turn buttons on the side like the Kindle 2 and PRS
